The Squirrel device is actually a portable pollution monitor that takes readings round the clock, where the results are then uploaded to a database that gives the central brain a whole lot more concrete, practical data which can subsequently be utilized to make informed decisions when it comes to fighting pollution across various levels. The Squirrel is small enough to fit into the palm of your hand or hooked up to a belt. It's integrated chip sensor can measure carbon monoxide and ozone, with plans to make it able to sniff out nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide in the works.

Nokia developed a visionary design concept that will help user stay connected to friends as well as to the health and local environment, sharing the environmental data the sensing device collects and view other users’ shared data.
nokia eco sensor

The concept consists of a wearable sensor unit which can sense and analyze environment, health, and local weather conditions, and a dedicated mobile phone.
The sensor unit will be worn on a wrist or neck strap made from solar cells that provide power to the sensors.
The users will be able to choose which sensors they would like to have inside the sensing device transforming it as a “personal trainee” if they were to choose a heart-rate monitor and motion detector (for measuring your walking pace).

How to use an Arduino microcontroller to sense invisible electromagnetic fields using wire, a resistor, and a LED.

Aaron ALAI's EMF detector project is awesomely simple to make and fun to use. An upgraded version can be built using an LED bargraph for more 'meter-like' functionality.
original project can be found here - http://www.aaronalai.com/emf-detector

additional info, and Arduino sketch - http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009...
